Objectives:

Upon successful completion of the course, the students should be able to

WRITING

      ·         use correct punctuation, capitalization, pronoun forms,  
            word choice, and spelling
·         use linkers, transitions, and parallel structures appropriately
·         generate and organize ideas using charts, graphs, tables, and outlines
·         distinguish between connotation and denotation
·         develop an understanding of the sentence, paragraph, and essay 
·         use supporting details in essays
·         understand the tone and style in academic writing
.    understand and use the key concepts of essay writing
     such as Subject, Purpose, Audience, Thesis Statement, Introduction, Body, and Conclusion
·         develop revising and editing skills to re-write paragraphs/ essays in light of feedback
·         write reaction/response essays on topics relevant to their undergraduate studies
·         perform guided writing tasks, such as CVs, job applications, and intention letters
 
READING
·         improve their skills with the use  of cohesive devices and text analysis techniques for comprehension
·         summarize the ideas in a text
·         paraphrase the ideas in a text
·         understand the author’s purpose and tone
·         evaluate and discuss the ideas in a text
·         think critically in response to a text
·         recognize and use a wider range of content words, technical language, and idiomatic expressions
 
SPEAKING &   PRESENTATION
·         use appropriate word-choice, language patterns, tone, and style
·         show improvement of appropriate pronunciation, intonation, word and sentence stress
·         agree and disagree
·         contradict politely
·         check and clarify when speaking
·         understand and articulate most frequently used technical and academic vocabulary
·         design an oral presentation based on academic texts with a coherent beginning, middle, and end
·         deliver an oral presentation with the use of effective body language, appropriate visual aids, and proper language patterns
 

References: No specific course book will be followed. Course materials  are to be   provided by the course group instructor(s).

Method of Instruction: Lecture; team/class discussions; communicative/meaningful language exercises;  in- and out-of-class reading/writing tasks; presentations; library research; online research; workshops; role plays.

Length and period: 4 hrs a week, 56 hrs in total / one academic semester, 14 weeks in total

Attendance: Students are required to attend classes, practice sessions, and have examinations. Minimum required attendance is 70% for all class sessions per semester, which  makes up 17 hours of absence at most . A student who does not fulfill the requirement for attendance is not allowed to take the final exam for the semester concerned and  is to repeat the course. Students who miss an exam will not be given a make-up exam unless they submit  an approved medical report or any other official document  proving their excuse.

Code of Academic Conduct: Cheating during the exams or presenting someone else's work as yours (plagiarism) will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Disciplinary action will be taken against any student  who violates the code of academic conduct.

Grading: - midterm exam: 30%

                - active participation during the classes, attitude  toward the course, preparation for the pre-assigned   chapters, assignments handed in due time : 15% 

                - delivery of presentation: 15 %           

                - final exam: 40%

* Students are required to submit assignments in due time. Late submissions without a valid excuse   will be penalized.

 * Each student is required to be present on the assigned day of his/her presentation. If any absenteeism occurs, his/her presentation can only be delayed for one week, resulting in 5 point loss off the total grade allocated for the presentation.
